Before the Earthquake:

  1. Create an Emergency Plan:
    • Develop a family emergency plan that includes a communication strategy and a meeting point.
    • Ensure everyone in your household knows the emergency procedures.
  2. Prepare an Emergency Kit:
    • Assemble a disaster supply kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, flashlight, batteries, and important documents.
  3. Secure Your Home:
    • Secure heavy furniture and appliances to prevent them from falling.
    • Identify safe spots in each room, such as under a sturdy table or desk.
  4. Know Your Surroundings:
    • Be aware of your environment and know the locations of emergency exits and safe zones.

During the Earthquake:

  1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On:
    • Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
    • If there is no furniture to take cover under, protect your head and neck with your arms and seek shelter against an interior wall away from windows.
  2. Stay Indoors:
    • If you’re indoors, stay there. Do not run outside, as falling debris poses a significant risk.
  3. Stay Away from Windows:
    • Move away from windows to avoid the risk of shattered glass.
  4. If You’re Outside:
    • Move to an open area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.
  5. If You’re Driving:
    • Pull over to a safe location away from overpasses, bridges, and tall structures. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.

After the Earthquake:

  1. Check for Injuries:
    • Assess yourself and others for injuries. Provide first aid as necessary.
  2. Be Cautious of Aftershocks:
    • Aftershocks can follow the initial quake. Be prepared for additional shaking and take appropriate precautions.
  3. Inspect Your Surroundings:
    • Check for hazards such as gas leaks, damaged electrical wiring, and structural damage. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve and leave the building.
  4. Communicate and Follow Authorities:
    • Listen to emergency broadcasts for information and follow instructions from authorities.
  5. Help Others:
    • Assist neighbors or others who may need help, especially those with disabilities or special needs.
  6. Document Damage:
    • Take photos of any damage to your property for insurance purposes.
  7. Reassess and Update Your Emergency Plan:
    • Reflect on the earthquake experience and make any necessary adjustments to your emergency plan and supplies.

Remember, being prepared and staying calm during an earthquake can significantly improve your safety and the safety of those around you.
